Our Leading Release of the Year: The Artist's Lux Claims the Top Position.

At first glance, Lux could seem closer to a challenging university challenge than the latest popular music record from an artist who just had a last single featured an international K-pop icon. Divided across four different movements and performed in 13 languages, this is a breathtaking orchestral-influenced work investigating feminine mystery, spiritual transcendence, and bodily change, frequently by way of the lens of different saintly figures. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme handled with raw openness elsewhere—is shot upwards here, buoyed by the lush presence of a major orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter within a vast roll call of collaborators. The pure daring alone makes the work of contemporary artists appear rather laughable.

Transcending Academic Exercise

The fact that this album manages to avoid overly intellectual chin-stroking is nearly miraculous, with sole credit going to the artist. Although this is not her first project to blend historical sounds with the present, the scale feel far higher on Lux, with the balancing act more dramatic. The element that really raises her fourth release, outside of its complex melodies, dense arrangements, and inherent drama, proves to be an essential sense of playfulness. Similar to the iconic Björk at her peak, there is a wondrous sense to the vocalist's voice that pulls the listener into its whirlwind. Even when she's breaking hearts apart, the listener nevertheless desire to be right there for the journey.

A Prime Moment of Joy

That playful spirit comes forth brightly on a stunning piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy for several minutes. Then, all the music falls silent, and there's a gleeful laugh and a comment prior to a comically over-the-top orchestral crescendo crashes down with cartoonish impact. The song immediately shifts into the wild single featuring racing strings, a powerful choral group, and a surprise role from the artist Björk.

"The magic with this album is that you never exactly understand—nor wish to predict—where it will go to next."

Almost every song finishes at a completely distinct place from where it started. One moment examines the transient nature of fame with a featherlight symphony before disintegrating into electronic cacophony. Another, a cut that recalls the artist's earlier trap-infused work begins off moody and sinister, with prowling beats, until sudden flamenco rhythms and an angelic choir enter to soften its rough corners.

The Balance Of Experiment & Pop

A key achievement of the album involves navigating the line of bold experimentation and mainstream accessibility. It is no surprise that the album has achieved her first release to break into the upper reaches of major markets: its heart contains a collection of truly undeniable pop songs. A song performed entirely in English builds around a refrain that seems to collect increasingly nagging hooks while it spins upward. This trick gets repeated on a different powerful track that grows and contracts, weaving layered melodies like an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number charms via its jaunty, theatrical flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the pop culture honesty of contemporary heartbreak anthems, lambasting an ex- partner described as an "emotional bully".
  • Across the album, the singing have a sharp edge, akin to a storybook figure concealing a blade: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You have the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

This album is pop on a maximalist scale, a hungry reach for high artistry in an era of looming artificial sameness. It eschews self-absorption for glorious transcendence, creating an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully controls its inherent ridiculousness. This is an abundant well of hidden treasure that takes time to fully mine but doesn't feels like hard work. While other major pop albums of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, Lux offers a sumptuous banquet at which the characters around the table, some intoxicated on sacred wine, flutter between discussions about ancient figures, the profound sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and common stories about hopeless men. It is a modern-day musical from pop's most endlessly creative practitioner.
