Guitar Hero Turns 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Bridged the Gap Among Rock Generations

It has been 20 years after Guitar Hero debuted across the Atlantic, offering everyday gamers the means to become rock legends. Not literally, but try convincing someone who has mastered the epic lengthy guitar solo before a packed living-room audience.

Developed by Harmonix, the game gave players a plastic guitar peripheral to follow on-screen cues moving along the screen in time with a song. Each riff mimicked specific notes, creating the sensation of a genuine performance.

Harmonix had already experimented in the music genre prior to teaming up with the publisher, which was acquired by Activision in 2006. Collaboratively, they laid the groundwork for an unlikely billion-dollar series which made a remarkable influence on numerous musicians featured, showcasing decades-old groups to millions of younger players.

Michael Dornbrook, ex-chief operating officer of Harmonix, recalls the initial budgetary hurdles in securing the songs – despite the fact the first two games primarily featured rerecorded tracks.

“We reproduced every song because the dollar figure was so high,” he says. “Despite having the necessary permissions alone, it proved nearly impossible. We failed to secure bands like the Who – RedOctane was operating on a shoestring budget, and we were pretty convinced the project would flop. But once Guitar Hero took off, album purchases and radio play increased, everyone wanted to participate.”

He continues: “Among the amazing things was how many parents reached out expressing gratitude for exposing their children to the music they adored. It evolved into an intergenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Finds Younger Fans

Irish group the Answer included Never Too Late on the 2008 game Guitar Hero World Tour. Guitarist the artist recalls the way the game revived older hits back into vogue: “Guitar Hero offered a larger, new demographic. Generally such music was considered music that was past it, however once it got featured on the title and teenagers discovered it, abruptly it became trendy. This validated it, and got rid of the ‘dad rock’ label. It provided all our music renewed popularity.”

At that time, the band's first record was still unreleased stateside, so the game was a key medium for exposure for the group as they went on US tour supporting AC/DC. “Their crew were playing Never Too Late on the tour bus, and some of them recognized us thanks to the game,” he notes.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs Enduring Influence

Music's biggest acts quickly capitalised on the series’ popularity, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in dedicated game editions that focused on each band’s catalogue and associated stories, visuals and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, the Aerosmith edition, reportedly to have made the band greater revenue than any of their studio albums. It sold well over 500,000 units in its first week, while demand for Aerosmith’s music rose significantly during an era when the music business was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire nimble-fingered dedication within the community. Recently, an online personality completed a remarkable feat featuring the challenging track – a notoriously difficult anthem popularized through the game – using a fan-made version, a freeware game with similar gameplay and extensive personalization features. This track is difficult even in the hardest setting, let alone played at double speed while hitting every one of its near 4,000 notes. The streamer stated it took months of practice of practice.

“Guitar Hero is a fun, fantasy thing. If you play Call of Duty, it doesn't imply you should pick up a real gun and go to war,” notes musician the artist.

The band had already completed a profitable run before their hit was featured in the third game, but Li says it turned them into a household name. “I recall our distributors informing us that our records were moving rapidly,” he says. “It exploded when we next toured, and we were playing right ahead of the headliners at the event.”

In fact, the band's visibility from Guitar Hero was so immense that it risked eclipsing everything else accomplishments. Last year, the track featured in promotional material for a major film. “Previously I felt otherwise, but now I accept it,” he admits. “If you only hear one DragonForce song, that's fine – each person has their own musical journey and I’m glad we’ve been part in fans' experiences”.

Enduring Impact of a Iconic Controller

The best promotion, whether it’s for cars, clothes or video games, extends beyond than selling something – it inspires a longing. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “Precisely what our team trying to create,” he confirms. “That thrill of performing as a music icon in the spotlight. From day one, the creators believed there’s an instinctive human desire to make music, and their goal was to leverage innovation to enable everyone to do it”.

Most installments were released over a mere half-decade between 2005 and 2010, featuring spin-offs like the DJ version, complete with a turntable controller, and Band Hero. After that, corporate focus in plastic instruments waned, except for a short-lived revival in 2015.

Games such as the fan project and newer releases have kept the community alive, with expectations of a new product from the founders on the way. Recently formed developers has begun production on its debut rhythm-based title. The initial creators are both involved in advisory roles. Are gamers ready to embrace a new entry following the classic?

“Our team believed those games could be like Madden allowing annual update every year,” Dornbrook says. “With abundant fresh tracks it could remain perennially popular, so I’ve always been hopeful. There’s no reason why it can’t continue for future fans.”
