British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several access tunnels leading to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of thousands of British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
